There is a train that comes from Namibia and Malawi,

There is a train that comes from Zambia and Zimbabwe,

There is a train that comes from Angola and Mozambique,

From Lesotho, from Botswana, from Zwaziland,

This train carries young and old, African men

Who are conscripted to come and work on contract

In the golden mineral mines of Johannesburg and its surrounding metropolis,

Sixteen hours or more a day, for almost no pay.

Deep, deep, deep down in the belly of the earth, when they are digging and drilling that shiny mighty evasive stone,

(Bertrand Russell, A History of Western Philosophy, 1945.)

Philosophy, as I shall understand the word, is something intermediate between theology and science. Like theology, it consists of speculations on matters as to which definite knowledge has, so far, been unascertainable; but like science, it appeals to human reason rather than to authority, whether that of tradition or that of revelation. All definite knowledge—so I should contend—belongs to science; all dogma as to what surpasses definite knowledge belongs to theology. But between theology and science there is a No Man's Land, exposed to attack from both sides; this No Man's Land is philosophy.

所謂的哲學,就我的想法而言,是一門介於神學和科學之間的學問。有如神學,它所探討的主題,是明確知識目前尚不可及的問題;但有如科學,它訴諸於人類理性,而非源自於傳統風俗或信仰啟示的權威。所有的明確知識我認為­—都屬於科學;而任何主張某些事物超越了明確知識可及範圍的獨斷教條,則都屬於神學。但介於神學和科學之間,卻存在著一片無人地帶,暴露在來自這兩門學問的攻擊之中;這片無人地帶就是哲學。

That mankind are not infallible; that their truths, for the most part, are only half-truths; that unity of opinion, unless resulting from the fullest and freest comparison of opposite opinions, is not desirable, and diversity not an evil, but a good, until mankind are much more capable than at present of recognizing all sides of the truth, are principles applicable to men's modes of action, not less than to their opinions. As it is useful that while mankind are imperfect there should be different opinions, so is it that there should be different experiments of living; that free scope should be given to varieties of character, short of injury to others; and that the worth of different modes of life should be proved practically, when any one thinks fit to try them.

人類並非完美無暇;我們所謂的真理,頂多是殘缺不全的;我們所謂的共識,除非是眾多對立意見經過最全面且最公開的討論後所獲得的結論,否則是不足取的,而多元化並非邪惡,反倒是良善的,直到有天人類終能比目前更能認清真理的所有面向為止。以上各項原則,不但適用於人類的意見,也同樣適用於人類的行為。正如由於人類並不完美所以多元意見有其必要,多元化的人生實驗也有其不可或缺之處;各種人格特質皆應獲得自由實現的空間,只要其發展不會對他人帶來傷害;而當有人試圖嘗試不同的人生模式時,其價值也應得到實質上的認肯。
